A lengthy spell in intensive care is hardly your typical route to musical rebirth, but after coming close to death in 2005, Spiritualized frontman Jason Pierce has recovered to produce a strong contender for album of the year.
Recreating the majesty that coursed through 1997s Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, Songs In A&E mixes moments of heart-lifting euphoria with more plaintive experiences of fear and regret.
Stand-out single Soul On Fire is unquestionably the highlight, an uplifting sing-along that sweeps everyone along in its wake, but the support cast of tunes is every bit as epic.
If only hospital radio sounded this good, nobody would ever be poorly again.
n Spiritualized have announced dates at Newcastle Academy on October 9 and Leeds University on October 10.
