NEWCASTLE-based NE1FM community radio
station presenter Sam Harris stages a fundraising
night at The Swallow Hotel,
Gateshead on Sunday between 7pm-11pm.
In addition to a five-piece Bluegrass band
other acts include Texicana, Ray Banks and
Phil Gibson. Tickets are £3 and all profits will
help finance the community station.
FORMER The Police frontman and
international star Sting is spearheading
Newcastle's bid to be voted the UK's
Most Musical City. With a rich musical
heritage ranging from The Police to The
Animals and Mark Knopfler to Maximo
Park, Newcastle has won the tightly
contested North-East nomination.
The campaign to find the Most Musical
City was launched by the Arts Council's
Take it away scheme which makes
musical instruments affordable and
accessible for all. People can vote for
their Most Musical City at
www.mostmusicalcity.co.uk
Newcastle is up against other big names
including London endorsed by Suggs,
Birmingham backed by Jamelia and
Leicester legend Engelbert Humperdinck.
Other cities seeking votes are: Brighton,
Bristol, Colchester; Liverpool,
Manchester and Sheffield.
BLAST on Tour is stopping at Newcastle
again, from April 30-May 2, to give young
people, aged 13-19 the chance to work with
industry experts. Free workshops include
recording a radio broadcast, being a TV
journalist, learning theatre skills, DJ-ing with
BBC 1Xtra dj Ace, rapping with award
winning rapper Akala , street dancing, VJ-ing
