Shake, cattle and roll
A POPULAR group of singers
will make their debut in part
of the region this spring.
The Singing Farmers have
strong links to agriculture and
have proved hugely successful
in their native Yorkshire.
They have raised more than
£70,000 in four years for the
Royal Agricultural Benevolent
Institution, which helps
farming families in difficulties.
Tickets have now gone on
sale for this year's concerts,
which include one at Teesdale
School, Barnard Castle, on
Friday, April 4.
Chris Berry, a rural
journalist who organises and
runs the group, said: "We have
had requests from all over the
UK to take the concerts further
afield and so we thought we
would start with County
Durham."
Other members of the group
include Tony Richards, a North
York Moors sheep farmer who
sings country music such as
Johnny Cash and early Elvis
Presley songs.
Phillip Holden runs farm
supply shops in Wensleydale
and Barnard Castle, and sings
Geordie folk songs; Charles
Marwood, a sheep farmer from
Sheriff Hutton, sings songs
from shows; Ken Jackson is a
cattle showman/farmer who
sings songs from the Fifties
and Sixties. Chris Berry sings
songs such as Brown Eyed
Girl.
Lloyd Lockwood plays the
keyboard for three of the
acts.
Tickets are £12, and cheques
should be made payable to
RABI. A stamped addressed
envelope should be sent to:
Singing Farmers Tickets, 2
Elmete Croft, Scholes, Leeds,
LS15 4BE.
