CD REVIEWS
The Pizzarelli Boys/Sunday at Pete's (Challenge CR73261)
John Pizzarelli on lead guitar, dad Bucky on rhythm, brother Martin on bass
and old friend Tony Tedesco on drums, recreate one of their family get togethers
with a selection of old, familiar tunes. It all sounds effortless and so comfortable
and warming - a record that worms its way into your affection.
Hein Van de Geyn & Lee Konitz/Meeting Again (Challenge CHR70132)
Sixteen years after first performing together the bass player and alto saxophonist
met again for three performances in 2006 which Hein described as a "musical
meeting of two players that like each other, that search to communicate, that
remain close to their individuality at the same time". Well put, and mission
accomplished. A very successful session.
Simon Spillett/Siena Red (Woodville WVCD120)
The tenor saxophonist's second CD is a special tribute to his inspiration Tubby
Hayes, helped in great measure by Hayes' drummer Spike Wells, in particular,
the rock solid Andrew Cleyndert, and pianist John Critchinson. The faster numbers
all impress but I'm inclined to prefer the more expressive ballads.
