CD REVIEWS
Vintage Cy Laurie, Vol. 2 1956-57 (Lake LACD259)
Not only vintage, but also rare, with many tracks previously unissued at all.
Cy is in top form, his bluesy clarinet both moving and fiery and he's particularly
well supported by trumpeters Alan Elsdon and Ken Sims. The programme includes
lots of Lil Hardin and Jelly Roll Morton tunes with the spirit of Johnny Dodds
pervading everything.
The Al Fairweather Collection 1953-57 (Lake LACD260)
Another of Lake's Double CDs for the Price of One, this is exceptionally good
value and again includes some of the rarest and finest jazz from the 1950s.
Al's trumpet playing, alongside Sandy Brown, Humphrey Lyttelton, Stan Greig,
Wally Fawkes, John Picard and Americans Albert Nicholas and Brother John Sellers,
is beautifully consistent.
Evan Christopher/Django a la Creole (Lejazzetal LJCD09)
I was delighted to hear this new CD as Christopher will be appearing at the
Gala Theatre in Durham on July 31. On this showing it will be one not to miss
with his eloquent Creole clarinet blending beautifully with Dave Blenkhorn's
swing guitar and some stunning performances, particularly Manoir de mes Reves
and Insensiblement.
