CD REVIEWS

Javon Jackson/Sugar Hill (Chesky SACD 333)

Tenor player Javon Jackson is not so much the leader as the first named in a nicely-balanced quartet with pianist Davis Hazeltine, bass player Paul Gill and drummer Tony Reedus. This is clearly a band of equals with Chesky's minimalist miking making them all sound clear and natural. With a familiar programme of Ellingtonian favourites, from Solitude to Chelsea Bridge, it's very mellow album, comfortable, but rich and warm.

Cedar Walton Trio & Dale Barlow/Manhattan after hours (Challenge CR73261)

With Dave Williams on bass and the late Billy Higgins on drums we have the same instrumentation here but a different sound and a different approach. Much of the material is familiar - Con alma, Relaxin' at the Camarillo, etc - but it's a little more forceful and the piano especially is crisper and more forward.

On the whole, there's more variety of pace and the playing, too, seems more memorable.
