CD REVIEWS
The George Washingmachine Quartet/Lejazzetal LJCD08)
The latest release on Dave Kelbie's Lejazzetal label features virtuoso Australian violinist and singer George Washingmachine in a collection of swing classics with fellow Oz Dave Blenkhorn on guitar, Sebastien Girardot bass and Kelbie himself on rhythm guitar. A wide-ranging programme includes China Boy and Blues In The Night as well as the immortal Sam, Sam, The Vegetable Man. I'm not mad on the vocals, but loved the instrumentals and they don't half swing.
Gerry Richardson/This Is What We Do (Jazz Action JA10)
A second Jazz Action album for the keyboard player and singer showcasing both his Hammond organ trio and his eight-piece band Big Idea, with a couple of quartet and quintet tracks too for variety. Guests, and soloists, include guitarist Rod Sinclair, son Harry on a Drum n' Bass remix, Gerry Linsley on saxes, Sue Ferris on tenor and flute and Sting who provides bass and backing vocals on Springtime In The City, one of several originals by Gerry. Smashing photos and detailed notes on a nice presentation.
