CD REVIEWS

Spike Wells/Reverence (Audio-B ABCD 5021)

Drummer Spike Wells' recent appearances in Darlington with Simon Spillett and Bobby Wellins impressed many of us with marvellous timekeeping and subtle, inventive support.

Those same qualities are evident on this album which also features Gwilym Simcock on piano and Malcolm Crease bass in a quite perfectly balanced trio. A lovely selection of ballads, a couple of attractive originals and a hymn, all beautifully played and clearly recorded, make this a thoroughly delightful record.

Frank Morgan + Rodney Kendrick Trio/Bop! (Telarc Jazz CD-83413)

With such a title you'd expect to hear tunes like Blue Monk, A Night in Tunisia and Lover Man and you won't be disappointed. With Morgan's Charlie Parker-like alto and Kendrick's Monkish piano you get a 1996 update on several familiar bop standards.

Nicely recorded, freshly played and very enjoyable.
