CD REVIEWS
Clark Tracey/Given Time (TenToTen TTTCDS 758)
This second volume in the drummer's tribute to British jazz composers also introduces his new group with Australian tenor player Brandon Allen, Gareth Williams piano and Arnie Somogyi bass.
A smashing selection of tunes ranges from Bobby Wellins' CUCB via Victor Feldman's Seven Steps to Heaven back to Charlie Chaplin's Smiles. A refreshing programme, some enjoyable playing and a lovely crisp recording.
George Coleman Quartet/I could write a book (Telarc Jazz CD-83439)
Here, tenor and soprano saxophonist George Coleman flies the American flag, as it were, with an album of Richard Rodgers' classics. This is a mid-price reissue of a fine album from 1998 with Harold Mabern, Jamil Nasser and Billy Higgins in support. The previously good sound is possibly even crisper now with Coleman in top form.
