Folk
May 15, 2008
DON'T look now, but the Yanks are coming. The region's folk venues are awash
with stars and stripes this week, starting tonight with the wonderful Kristina
Olsen at Hartlepool's Studio on a rare visit from Los Angeles with her Bonnie
Raittstyled folk and blues.
American traditional music at its best comes to Kirkby Fleetham's Black Horse
on Saturday with Jeff Warner and Katherine Davidson, with locals Dan Walsh and
Tinker's Cuss as support.
Also on Saturday, one of my own favourite American folk duos, Dana and Susan
Robinson, are at Washington's Davy Lamp. Dana and Susan are firm favourites
with the Davy Lamp crowd, so be sure to get there early.
Tuesday's offerings from across the Atlantic are Steve and Kristi Nebel at
Cramlington's Hind Club, and no less than the great and legendary Peggy Seeger
in concert at Gatehead's Sage.
The Sage's other offerings this week include a double-header tomorrow with
folkoutlaw Jim Moray and Scots whiz kid Colum Stewart, and a Sunday afternoon
show by the eclectic Simon Mayer and Hilary James, followed by an evening show
with their band, The Mandolinquents.
Finally, let's not forget some goodtime blues from the Tyne Delta, courtesy
of local duo The Hokum Hotshots at Westoe Club in South Shields on Sunday. Hexham
Gathering kicks off on Wednesday night, by the way, for some great folk music,
of which I'll have more tell you next week.
