Folk
April 24, 2008
THE local folk scene seems like an exclusively male-dominated domain this week, with one notable exception, an appearance at Skelton's Duke William tonight by the Trio Threlfall, with sisters Jane and Amanda bringing their repertoire of traditional songs to one of the region's best folk venues.
Up in Hexham at the Queen's Hall tonight, John Renbourne and Robin Williamson join together in one of their rare duo appearances, then tomorrow Vin Garbutt is at the Kirkleatham Hall in Redcar. On Saturday I'm looking forward to a solo gig at the Nine Kings Bistro in Barnard Castle, which is rapidly becoming another one of our most popular local spots for acoustic music.
Up at Gateshead's Sage, Teddy Thompson is back in town with some of the best self-penned songs around. Ken Wilson eludes the rest of his illustrious family for a rare solo gig at Westoe Club in South Shields on Sunday.
Tuesday's choice is between Bram Taylor and Roly Hindmarch at Newton Aycliffe's Candlelight Club, and Billy Bragg at Gateshead's Sage. A quick word also about Badapple Theatre's production of Laurel and Charlie, written by my Bad Penny cohort Kate Bramley with musichall style songs by myself, and which comes to Reeth Memorial Hall on Friday and Kirkby Fleetham Village Hall on Saturday.
