Folk
March 14, 2008
CALL me ungrateful, but following my "more folk on the TV and radio" rant last month, I'm not really appeased by another night of Irish music on BBC4 tomorrow night.
Much as I love the ballads and blarney myself, there's more to folk music than this, and just imagine what a great TV programme could be made from the list of performers who are visiting our region this week.
Tonight's choice is between the great songwriter and performer Harvey Andrews at Skelton's Duke William, and the start of Darlington's Spring Thing weekend, with appearances by Dick Gaughan and Brian McNeill, Flossie Malaiville, The Wilsons and Synergy scheduled over the four days.
Tomorrow has Bernard Wrigley and Jame Fagan and Nancy Kerr in a double bill at Saltburn Spa, while at Reeth Memorial Hall you can sample some musical comedy from Quicksilver, one of the scene's most classy duos.
Saturday sees Celtic band Craobh Rua at Washington's Davy Lamp, Tom Bliss at Kirkby Fleetham's Black Horse and the amazing Blazing Fiddles at Durham's Gala Theatre.
Sunday's toss of the coin is between the traditional songs of Dave Whaley and Bill Fletcher at Westoe Club and the wild and youthful vigour of The Monster Ceilidh Band at Byker's Cumberland Arms.
The Doonans are at South Shields Customs House on Monday, and The Old Age Travellers are at Croxdale's Daleside Arms on Tuesday, then our week winds down with Scots fiddle diva Jenna Reid at Hexham's Queen's Hall on Wednesday.
Imagine this line-up in an edition of Later With Jools Holland, with Vin Garbutt as the frontman.
Anyway, no more TV ranting from me, I promise. Keep music live!
