CD REVIEWS

Stan Tracey-Keith Tippett/Supernova (ReSteamed RSJ105) Needing two matching pianos, opportunities for these two musicians to play together were limited to perhaps a dozen occasions. Their 1974 Wigmore Hall recital, TNT, was rightly acclaimed and even, briefly, reissued on Blue Note, but this recently rediscovered tape is from another recital at the ICA in London in 1977 and is even better. Beautifully recorded with the musicians clearly separated in each channel, it's an object lesson in creativity and expression.

Sylvia Rae Tracey/Up from the Skies (TenToTen TTTCDS757) This new CD gives a much better picture of singer Sylvia Tracey than her previous one which was inclined to be overproduced. The focus here is more on the music and the interpretation, and Sylvia receives the best support from Zoe Rahman, Simon Allen, Arnie Somogyi and John Paricelli as well as husband Clark Tracey, and with Stan Tracey also guesting on three tracks.

Hendrix, Willie Nelson, Ipanema (as you've never heard it before), Nice And Easy and several others new to me sit comfortably together in a personal and distinctive mix.
