NOWADAYS, it's a surprise to come across a PS2 game, especially one commanding a full price, so Sonic Riders had better be good.
Sonic games have always been about speed. Sonic Riders is a cross between a trad Sonic title and something like Mario Kart. Sadly, it's not as good as either.
Playing it felt more like a wacky version of Wipeout: Sonic and his pals have to negotiate tortuous courses, perform jumps, grinds and collect power boosts for any chance of victory.
Nor is the course design perfect. Once or twice Sonic disappeared into the scenery - signs of a rush job perhaps?
The Wii version is more fun, but it remains hobbled by the same game-play deficiencies. There are plenty of better racers on both of these consoles.
