Sony X-Series Walkman

SONY may have invented the concept of portable music players but its efforts to invent an iPod killer have been embarrassing failures. They always seemed at least one step behind the Apple jukebox.

In the X-Series Walkman, Sony is confident it has finally managed to get ahead of the game.

Looks-wise, the new player has an impressive three-inch widescreen and an unusual touch-screen interface. As well as the usual music and video playback it also boasts an in-built FM radio.

The screen is a special organic light-emitting diode design which uses a fraction of the juice most colour panels require. But the big scoop is the addition of a digital noise-cancelling algorithm capable of eliminating 98 per cent of ambient noise. It works, too.

Available in two flavours, a 16GB device costing £219, and a 32GB bruiser for £289, the Sony X-Series could be the player to finally give the iPod a run for its money.
