De Bortoli Semillon Chardonnay 2006 from Australia

10:49am Thursday 5th June 2008

This week's wine has a lemon-green colour with a waxy candy peel aroma.

It has a crisp well-rounded palate with the taste of citrus fruit particularly melon and grapefruit, with a touch of honey.

It's 13 per cent alcohol and will be a good accompaniment to fish chicken and Asian food.

The wine contains 73 per cent Semillon and portions of both grape varieties were fermented separately in American oak barrels, which has provided a full-bodied wine.

The previous vintage actually received a gold medal at the Wine Challenge - this one's currently on offer at £4.99 with Oddbins until June 8.

Oddbins also deal with the Obikwa company of South Africa. Having tried one before I decided to taste their 2007 sauvignon blanc. This is a light wine of 12 per cent alcohol which has crisp green apple flavours with hints of guava fruit.

It's provenance is Stellenbosch where the grapes were actually hand-picked and the fermentation and ageing was completely oak-free. On offer until June 8th at £3.99.
