An Italian wine this week, with a name everyone knows, from Aldi's fine wine selection.

It has a deep garnet-red colour with signs of ageing around the rim. Dark fruit and toasty oak flavours emerge on the palate blended with a rich and full character reminiscent of blackberries.

It's perfect with beef but also goes well with pork, poultry and mature cheeses - £6.99 at Aldi.

This is a four-year-old wine of thirteen per cent alcohol showing some complexity. It's been aged in oak barrels for twelve months and in bottle for three months before release.

The grape varieties used vary somewhat in Chianti but the basis should be sangiovese with the addition of canaiolo to soften the wine. Since 1984 an addition of 10 per cent non-traditional grape varieties have been allowed e.g. cabernet sauvignon.

This wine is from the heartland of the Chianti district.
