Smart People (15)
INTERESTING cast, dull film. Ellen Page follows
her Oscar-nominated star turn as the knowing
Juno by playing a teenager who is also wise
beyond her years.
Sarah Jessica Parker as an
ER doctor may stretch your credulity as much as
Dennis Quaid playing a professor who's an
authority on Victorian literature.
University lecturer Lawrence Wetherhold (Quaid)
is not a very nice man, forever being rude to his
students and rewarding them with low marks.
No wonder his children retreat into a world of
their own. Son James (Ashton Holmes) just gets
on with his life while daughter Vanessa (Page) is
a chip off the old academic block. The
unexpected arrival of adopted brother Chuck
(Thomas Church Haden, the Oscar-winner from
Sideways) looking for somewhere to stay sets
the cat among the pigeons.
Soon, he's offering the prof tips on asking out
the doctor who treats him in ER (Sarah Jessica
Parker, abandoning fashion for doctoring) after
an accident. This moves along at a pace no one
would describe as hurried and you may well, like
me, run out of patience with these selfish,
dislikeable people well before the end of the
relatively brief running time.
Stars: Dennis Quaid, Ellen Page, Thomas
Haden Church, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashton
Holmes.
Running time: 95 mins
Rating: Two stars
