Made of Honour (12A)
THE convoluted title hides yet
another comedy about a troubled
wedding day. With its American
tourist eye view of Scotland - all tartan
kilts and caber-tossing - this struggles to
maintain any credibility.
Patrick Dempsey, the former teen star
reincarnated as Dr Derek McDreamy'
Shepherd in Grey's Anatomy on TV, stars
as bachelor-about-town Tom. He enjoys
a succession of one night stands and
relies on best friend Hannah (Michelle
Monaghan) to sort out his business
affairs.
Then she disappears to Scotland on a
job, only to return engaged and set to
marry laird Colin (Kevin McKidd). Asking
Tom to be her maid of honour - don't
ask me why the title is spelt M-A-D-E -
isn't the cleverest of ideas. Thus, Tom
finds himself wearing a mini-kilt (so short
he risks prosecution as well as frostbite
to his wedding tackle) and competing in
the Highland games. The Scottish tourist
industry may be pleased, audiences less
so. How embarrassing to see Hannah
Gordon overacting as the bridegroom's
mother and even McKidd looking
suitably sheepish at mocking his
Scottish roots.
Followers of Dempsey, and he has quite
a few thanks to his bedside manner as
Dr McDreamy, may find something to
enjoy here. Monaghan was great in Kiss
Kiss Bang Bang but The Heartbreak Kid
and now Made Of Honour suggest she's
not that wise in her choice of movies.

Monaghan, Kevin McKidd, Kathleen
Quinlan, Sydney Pollack
