Forgetting Sarah Marshall (15)
FROM the people who gave us
Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old
Virgin, so you know what to
expect - an adult comedy with unPC
humour, smutty gags and juvenile
jokes, as well as a smattering of home
truths. Segel writes and stars as newlysingle
musician Peter Bretter, who goes
to pieces after being dumped by longterm
girlfriend Sarah Marshall (Kristen
Bell), an actress in a CSI-style TV
detective show.
He takes the break-up badly and,
after several sessions of meaningless
sex, goes to Hawaii on holiday to
recover. Bad move. Sarah and her new
boyfriend - pelvis-thrusting, tanglehaired
rock singer Aldous Snow
(Russell Brand) are staying there too.
The scene is set for what the makers
call "the world's first romantic disaster
movie" as Peter tries to get over his
heartache with the help of sympathetic
hotel receptionist Rachel (Mila Kunis),
only to find Sarah and Aldous waiting
for him round every corner.
Segel emerges as a sympathetic and
appealing hard-done-by hero while
Brand is so much better than you might
expect from his seemingly over-the-top
TV appearances. His performance is
controlled, not chaotic. The women
aren't as carefully drawn, making Bell
and Kunis far less interesting.
Love Actually this isn't. But fans of
this strain of US comedy will be
rewarded with many a laugh.

Kunis, Russell Brand
