Fool’s Gold (12A)
WITH an adventurous couple
at loggerheads seeking
hidden treasure, Fool's Gold
wants to be the new Romancing
The Stone. More like Kicking The
Bucket thanks to dull leading
actors, dodgy accents, cut-price
action and leaden direction. The
scenery's nice, though.
Matthew McConaughey and Kate
Hudson have done better together
before - in How To Lose A Guy In
Ten Days - but here fail to find
the necessary chemistry as
arguing married couple Ben and
Tess.
Their divorce is interupted by
fresh clues in the search for
sunken 18th century treasure
known as the Queen's Dowry. The
island Mr Big (Bigg Bunny as he's
known) and Ray Winstone's rival
treasure hunter are also in
pursuit of the valuable loot.
McConaughey coasts through the
role on pecs appeal, letting his
bronzed and beefed up body do
the talking. Hudson, who does
keep her shirt on, is no better. At
least she uses her own accent.
Unlike Ewen Bremner (comic
Ukranian), Winstone (American,
I think) and a hilarious Donald
Sutherland as a rich Brit yacht
owner saying things like "I sent
the chopper to Miami" in a
ridiculously posh British voice.
While we're naming the guilty
parties, don't forget director
Andy Tennant. He fails to make
the action exciting or encourage
the leading couple to endear
themselves to the audience.
Stars: Matthew McConaughey,
Kate Hudson, Donald
Sutherland, Ewen Bremner,
Running time: 112 mins
Rating: Two stars
