Flashbacks Of A Fool (15)
DANIEL Craig is a washed up
Hollywood actor, hooked on
drugs and three-in-a-bed romps.
Only on screen, of course, in a
heated drama that offers him
respite from playing the action
hero as the latest James Bond.
He's also a good mate of Baillie
Walsh, writer and director of this
film of three parts.
Craig's fading Joe Scott bookends
the story of his turbulent teenage
years growing up with his mother
(Olivia Williams) by the sea.
We first encounter adult Joe
(Daniel Craig) enjoying a naked
drugs-and-sex romp. Those who
liked seeing Mr Craig in those
snug-fitting trunks in Casino
Royale will be pleased to know he
doesn't bother with such thing
and displays his perky little
bottom.
A meeting with his agent (Mark
Strong) makes it clear that Scott's
life is on a downward spiral,
making him think of those
gloriously sunny days of his
childhood.
This is where the middle section
of the film comes in with Harry
Eden taking over as the young
Joe. To a background of sounds
from Roxy Music and David
Bowie, he plays out his teen years
- hanging out with best friend
Boots (Max Deacon), his awkward
first kiss with Ruth (Felicity
Jones) and his first sexual
encounter with the older woman
next door (Jodhi May).
Then it's back to the present day
as Joe travels home to England
following a death and meets up
with the ghosts of his past.
With South Africa standing in for
both the English coast and
Malibu, Walsh's drama mixes a
nostalgic tale of youth with a
warning about the perils of fame
and fortune.

Olivia Williams, Jodhi May,
