In Bruges (18)
IF this black comedy often
sounds like a stage play, then
it's not all that surprising as
the writer and first time feature
director Martin McDonagh is an
award-winning playwright.
That experience translates into
his screenplay in the dialogue,
notably the exchanges between
two hit men, Ray (Colin Farrell)
and the older, more experienced
Ken (Brendan Gleason).
They've been sent to Bruges - it's
in Belgium - after a hit has gone
dreadfully wrong. Harry (Ralph
Fiennes, making a late
appearance and then having
enormous fun as a gangland boss)
has ordered them to wait there
until they receive fresh
instructions.
The repartee is played to
perfection by Farrell - nice to see
him doing comedy after a series
of big budget Hollywood flops -
and Gleason. They're an odd Irish
couple with only one thing in
common, they both kill for a
living.
At the back of their minds is the
worry that they've been sent to
Bruges for a reason, one that
becomes abundantly and
alarmingly clear once Harry
sends his instructions and follows
it up with a personal visit.
McDonagh's dark comedy is all
the better for not being afraid to
include politically incorrect
humour (and put some of it in the
mouth of a racist dwarf) before
the inevitably bloody finale
played out against the
background of the undeniably
beautiful city of Bruges.
