REC (18)
A PAIR of horror movie masters,
Jaume Balaguero and Paco
Plaza, direct and ensure double
the terror as a TV news crew spend the
night with a fire crew.
It sounds boring
as far as reality TV goes, but ambitious
young TV reporter Angela (Manuela
Velasco) and cameraman Pablo
(Vincente Gil) get more than they're
bargaining for on the late watch.
Following up a routine late night call,
they and the firemen find themselves
trapped inside a building where all hell
is breaking loose. An elderly woman is
barricaded into her flat, but why?
What exactly is happening is only
viewed through the "eyes" of the TV
camera, complete with dodgy sound,
patchy lighting and alarming sound
effects.
Filmed in real time, this is
unsettling stuff as heavy breathing,
screams and footsteps fill the
soundtrack. The terror doesn't let up
for the rest of a fast, restless 78
minutes under the breathless direction
of Spanish film-makers Balaguero and
Plaza. Coming soon after the terrifying
The Orphanage, it shows that the
Spanish are the people to call if you
want to be scared out of your wits.
Starring: Manuela Velasco, Ferran Terraza,
David Vert, Jorge Yamam, Vincente
Gil
Running time: 78 mins
Rating: Three stars
