WHAT’S ON: Singer Zoe Gilby, Travellers Rest, Cockerton, 01325- 382676.

CD REVIEWS: Absolute Zawinul (Intuition INT34562) This is Joe Zawinul’s last studio recording in which the 20-strong chamber orchestra Absolute Ensemble with former members of the Zawinul Syndicate perform some of his vast repertoire. Musical Director Kristjan Jarvi worked closely with Joe who is also featured on keyboards and vocoder on an intriguing and important part of his legacy.

Joe Zawinul/Money in the pocket (Atlantic 8122 79822-0) This was recorded in 1965 when Joe was an established member of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. His first US album as leader it also features Blue Mitchell, Joe Henderson and Pepper Adams and with one solo and two trio tracks for contrast it’s a gem of a recording for the period.

Sophie Smith/You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To (Woodville WVCD128) This new singer comes highly recommended by executive producer Alan Barnes for her swing, phrasing and harmonic awareness.

Add a refreshing choice of programme combining standards with her own lyrics, and support from the Ross Stanley Trio with guests Jim Hart and Stan Sulzmann, for a very promising debut disc.
