WHAT’S ON: Tees Valley Jazzmen at Darlington Arts Centre, Saturday lunchtime, 01325-486555.
CD REVIEWS: Colin Towns-HR Big Band/Visions of Miles (In+Out ORCD771012) Arranger Colin Towns focuses on Miles Davis’ electric period with some wonderful revamping of tracks from Bitches Brew, Tutu, etc. There’s some wonderful playing by this Frankfurt Radio Big Band, recorded live in 2008, with soloists including Julian Arguelles who’s at Darlington Arts Centre on February 12.
Sun Ra Arkestra/Live at the Paradox (In+Out IOR770982) Although it’s been 16 years since Ra’s death his famous Arkestra has continued to perform with stalwarts like leader Marshall Allen and Charles Davis alongside newer players like Farid Barron. This CD, recorded live in 2008, brings us a wide range mixing familiar material like Hocus Pocus and Velvet with new pieces.
Enrico Rava-Ran Blake/Duo en Noir (Between the Lines/Challenge BTLCHR71224) The trumpeter and pianist met only once in 1999 when this concert was recorded. A tribute to the late Art Farmer and to film noir it mixes standards like Nature Boy and Tea for Two with film tunes Vertigo and Laura. A great success with some lovely, thoughtful, playing.
