REVIEWS

Sean Jones/The Search Within (Mack Avenue MAC1044)

On his fifth Mack Avenue record, trumpeter Sean Jones turns in a masterly performance (but then he is Professor of Jazz Studies, Duquesne University and lead trumpet in the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra). There’s a nicely balanced programme from the beautiful Love’s Lullaby and The Ambitious Violet to the swinging Sean’s Jones Come Down. It’s not just a solo performance either with impressive contributions from pianist Orrin Evans and saxophonists Brian Hagans and Walter Smith as well as a number of guests.

Scotty Barnhart/Say It Plain (Unity Music DIG137)

Fellow trumpeter Barnhart has a similar pedigree (Florida State University and the Count Basie Orchestra) but a different sound. His programme mixes originals with jazz standards like Con Alma and Giant Steps. He gets sterling support from saxophonist Todd Williams and his guests include Wynton Marsalis, Clark Terry, Herlin Riley and Marcus Roberts.
