CD REVIEWS
Grachan Moncur III/Some Other Stuff (Blue Note 65152)
It's a delight to hear one of the rarer Blue Note issues, one of only two led by avant garde trombonist Grachan Moncur III back in 1964. He assembled a sensational band with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Cecil McBee and Tony Williams, who all bring a thoughtful approachto the four Moncur compositions.
Worth listening to several times.
Michael Garrick Jazz Orchestra/Lady of the Aurian Wood (Jazz Academy JAZA17)
This newest work by pianist, composer and band leader Michael Garrick, subtitled "a magic life of Duke", was commissioned last year for the 20th international Ellington conference. It reflects on
certain elements in Duke's life and music, giving an outing for Garrick's occasional, but ever developing big band. Established and new players work perfectly together, among them Norma Winstone,
Alan Jackson, Steve Waterman and Martin Shaw. Available on jazzacademy. co. uk
