3:16pm Friday 20th January 2012 in Country By Brian Clough
IT was many years ago at one of the International Festival of Country Music at Wembley that I first heard of Suzy Bogguss. Wearing my radio journalist hat, I was there to record interviews with some of the American artists, and took the chance to stroll to various sound check areas.
I heard what I thought was a record being played in the main arena and decided to investigate.
To my surprise, I discovered a solo artist on stage picking a guitar and singing a song called Night Rider’s Lament. It was the most pure, cleanest, and most beautiful vocal I had heard in a long while… sheer magic.
I discovered that I had been listening to the sound check of Suzy Bogguss.
Over the years, Bogguss has demonstrated the most incredible voices that you will hear. Her albums move from gentle country sounds through up-tempo belters, to modern swing, western swing and jazzy blues offerings.
She returns to the UK to play a series of dates here in May. The North-East date to make a note of is the Gala Theatre, Durham, where she appears on May 23.
Gala Theatre Box Office: 0191- 332-4041.
As a taster I’ll be playing a track from her on this week’s American Connection show from Saturday on euvue.co.uk
