WHAT’S ON: The Northern Sinfonia, conducted by Thomas Zehetmair, will perform at The Sage, Gateshead, at 7.30pm tonight. The programme will feature oboist Heinz Holliger playing Elliot Carter’s Oboe Concerto, as well as work by Haydn and Schubert. Box office: 0191-443 4661.
REVIEWS: Kertesz: Bruckner, Williams (BBC Legends BBCL 4264-2). A gripping account of Bruckner’s Symphony No 4. The Hungarian conductor Istvan Kertesz, with the London Symphony Orchestra, displays the architecture of the work in all its glory.
The album includes a searching interpretation of Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme, by Thomas Tallis.
Richter, Schubert etc (BBCL 4265-2) From the London’s Royal Festival Hall. Includes Schubert’s Piano Sonata in C minor and work by Bartok, Szymanoski and Prokofiev.
Franck: Fine Arts Quartet (Naxos 8.572009) A dynamic account of Franck’s String Quartet; regarded as the summit of his achievement.
Roussel: Symphony No 1 (Naxos 8.570323) The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, conducted by Stephane Deneve, give a compelling performance of Albert Roussel’s Symphony No 1 Poem of the Forest. It traces the cycle of seasons from winter to autumn.
