A STATE-OF-THE-NATION survey on Ethiopia since Live Aid, and it does make reassuring reading.

The country is still poor, many of its people are on the breadline, economic progress is negligible and the world economic crisis could stop further aid in its tracks.

And all the time, the population keeps on increasing and adding to the country’s problems.

The Chinese are now on the scene and developing Ethiopia’s infrastructure, but also offering a political system with little regard for freedom. Bleak prospects indeed.
