Make the Most of Your Time on Earth: A Rough Guide to the World (£18.99)

IT’S always exciting to come back from a holiday somewhere fantastic and to tell friends about it in the hope that they might be fired up to follow in your footsteps someday.

Here, the people who’ve been more places than most of us have had hot dinners – the Rough Guide writers – give their personal recommendations, accumulated over the 25 years of the guides’ existence.

These are their 1,000 ultimate travel experiences – from defying gravity on Austria’s Semmering Railway, to listening for nightingales on the Greek island of Samos, to following ancient footsteps on Peru’s Inca Trail.

Inspiring stuff.

Also available from Rough Guides is The Rough Guide to Camping in Britain, a beautifully illustrated guide to more than 300 of the country’s best sites.

During 2008, the 38-year-old travelled from Mangalore, in the south Indian state of Karnataka, through Kerala, to the most southerly point in India, Kanyakumari, to research and take photographs for the book.

“I particularly enjoyed visiting Fort Kochi, in Kerala, and watching the sundown on the beach at Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, where three oceans of different colours meet,” says Stuart, from East Herrington, a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers.
