IT’S twice the size of Texas, has 11 official languages, and a population of 49 million – numbers which will be significantly swollen when hordes of football supporters fly in for the start of the World Cup in June.

If we get knocked out early this might be a good book to have on hand, with details of where to go and what not to miss while you’re visiting.

You might need to hail a rikki (an ex-London taxi cab) to get to your destination but there’s absolutely no shortage of attractions and points of interest, from the prison on Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 27 years, to the wide open spaces of the country’s game reserves where the Big Five roam free.
