Jobs boost for engine maker
ENGINE maker Cummins has
created almost 250 jobs at its Darlington
factory during an "amazing
year".
The US firm's plant now employs
more than 1,000 people and
imports 60 per cent of its products
to Europe and Asia.
Last year saw record engine
production of almost 80,000 engines,
36 per cent higher than
2006. The company said 17,000 of
these engines were exported to
China.
Plant manager Tim Millwood
said: "Last year was an amazing
year, and a significant effort has
been made by our employees to
reach these record levels.
"It is important to mark this
success, but we cannot relax.
"We must continue to improve
to remain competitive"
At the end of last year, Cummins
said it was creating 60 jobs
at the Darlington plant, with the
opening of an exhaust section.
The Cummins Emissions Solutions
division of the business,
which manufactures exhaust
after-treatment systems for customers,
moved to Darlington.
The move means Cummins is
now one of the Tees Valley's
largest private sector employers.
