Years Gone By: Northallerton

  • An intriguing picture from
1961 captioned: “Northallerton
station: the trail of destruction
after the crash.”
  • Inside Northallerton Mart,
1965.
  • The Buck Inn, in the High
Street, in 1962.
  • A 1931 picture of one of
Northallerton’s most distinctive
buildings in the High
Street. It used to be the Rutson
Hospital, but the picture was
taken because, according
to the caption
on the rear, “the
vine spans a distance
of 100ft”.
  • In these days of 24/7 shopping,
this poster looks wonderfully
outdated. In 1965,
there were moves in
Northallerton to introduce a
five-day shopping week, but
the shops could not decide
which day in addition to Sunday
to shut.
