The following account was related by Mrs E. M. Murray, the daughter of Barney Hodgson, in reply to the previous account, which can be read here.

What Mr Bell said was quite correct. After my father (Barney Hodgson) had been home for breakfast he returned to the shipyard to see what was going on, but before he got there he stood sentry at the Swedish Church, sending children back home.

He received two direct hits. I know he was very badly injured because I was the one who had to dispose of his clothes afterwards.

I have never forgotten the sight of them. We didn’t find out where he was until the following day, when my brother had to go to the Cameron Hospital to identify him.
