STEAM train enthusiasts are thrilled to receive a £2,000 donation towards a plan to get Flying Scotsman back on track.
Fundraisers at the National Rail Museum (NRM), in York, are celebrating after the funds were given for the Steam our Scotsman appeal.
They were handed over by a former owner of the famous train, Alan Pegler, as the volunteers seek to raise £250,000.
The Steam our Scotsman appeal was launched last month to help restoration of the train and to bring it back into steam.
Sue Fisher, NRM head of development, said: “To have Alan Pegler pledge his support for Flying Scotsman once more, demonstrates how an iconic locomotive like this can really find a way into your heart. We are keen to remind the public that all donations will make a great difference to the appeal to see this national icon back in steam.”
Mr Pegler took ownership of Flying Scotsman in 1963 after it was withdrawn from service by the then British Railways. He paid £3,000 to save it from the scrap heap and restored it, as close as possible, to its original standard.
