RAILWAY enthusiasts have been given a sneak preview of a steam locomotive that will soon be put to work in the Durham Dales.

Rail Restorations North-East, in Shildon, County Durham, held an open day on Saturday during which visitors could see the progress on No 77 Norwood. Restoration of the Robert Stephenson and Hawthorne tank locomotive has been commissioned by the Weardale Railway.

Norwood is thought to be the last steam locomotive that was working in the North-East.

Next month, Weardale Railway hopes to start running services between Bishop Auckland and Stanhope with Norwood among its rolling stock.
