LAST week, Memories had the privilege of addressing Egglescliffe Local History Group in the village's beautifully-floodlit 900-year-old church, with Saxon stones in the porch and a sundial dated 1779 over the door.

So for this week's From the Archive we delved into the Egglescliffe packet in The Northern Echo's photo-library and, a little disappointingly, there is only a drawing of the church.

However, there was a good selection of views of the pretty village clustered around its green high on the Durham bank of the River Tees - Yarm is on the Yorkshire bank.

In fact, the village probably owes its existence to the shallow ford, where the road bridge is today, which is believed to have been the first upstream crossing of the river from the sea.
