THERE has to be at least one public toilet related item.
Patricia Dougill emails to say: “There were subterranean toilets at Bishop Auckland, to the north side of the Town Hall. I don’t know when they closed but they were certainly there in early 1950s.”
Who can tell us about these salubrious facilities?
How about a second toilet-related item? Bill Pearson sends in a lovely picture from the Heugh, in Hartlepool, which he took a couple of years ago. If we are to take the sign at face value – “toilets closed overnight” – there must have been bricklayers employed every morning in Hartlepool to take down the bricks and open the toilets and more bricklayers employed every evening to brick them back up again.
