THIS week, From the Archive delves into some of the old pictures of Darlington that are to be found in The Northern Echo’s photo-library. It is a bit of a hotch-potch of nostalgia, but if you have any information or reflections about any of the pictures, we’d love to hear from you.

The Northern Echo:

MURDER SCENE: The police van parked rather crazily in the road on the right is outside 69, Park Street, Darlington, where Joseph Barnes, 48, was found shot dead on December 13, 1966. A 58-year-old man from a few doors away was arrested hours later and charged with murder – if anyone knows any more about this incident, please let us know. Since then, Park Street has been demolished although its entrance survives, leading into the St Cuthbert's Way Post Office depot. The new building at the end of the street is the police station, so the boys in blue did not have far to go to apprehend their suspect

The Northern Echo:

WAITING FOR A BUS: An enormous queue stretching down Feethams in June 1960, with the mock-timbered effect of the Boot and Shoe in the background. The bus at the head of the queue is going to Newcastle – but what was the attraction?

The Northern Echo:

FROM THE TOWN CLOCK: An undated photograph looking down on the north end of High Row. It must, though, be mid-1960s

The Northern Echo:

NEW LAY-OUT: This "experimental rounadabout" was installed where Grange Road met Victoria Road, beneath the mock half-timbered frontage of the Cleveland Car Company in April 1964. Was it a success? And can anyone tell us about Arnold Cockburn's coaches of Cockerton?

The Northern Echo:

GREAT NORTH ROAD: The Grange Road junction with Victoria Road on August 3, 1964 – the experimental roundabout had been installed here five months earlier, but on this August Bank Holiday, the traffic queues stretched back almost to Blands Corner. Perhaps the experiment wasn't a success!

AND LUCKS SQUARE...

Lucks Square was a late Victorian development on top of the Bishop's Palace in Leadyard, on the banks of the Skerne. The new education office behind Darlington Town Hall has just been completed on its site. Here are some pictures from the Echo archive which were taken in November 1959 with demolition imminent:

The Northern Echo:

So, that's St Cuthbert's Church in the background.

The Northern Echo:

And that's the cooling towers of the Haughton Road power station in the background...

The Northern Echo:

And that's the Civic Theatre in the background - but what is the strange tank on spindly legs?
