THE Historic England archive contains 12m photographs and documents which chart England's archaeology, architecture and local history, so it is no surprise that somewhere as photogenic as Newcastle features heavily.
A new book compiled from Historic England's collection contains some stunning views of how the city used to be, contrasting them with colour views of how the scenes look today.
The pictures are captioned with plenty of historic information about the scenes, so the book doubles as a guide to what not to miss next time you are in the toon. Here are a few pictures – all used courtesy of the Historic England Archive – from the book.
