WE'VE been meandering down Skinnergate in Darlington quite a lot recently – the cinemas at either end always attract our attention, particularly as one of them became the Majestic ballroom that was a favourite of the 1960s Beat generation – so this week we thought we'd delve into The Northern Echo's picture packet for the street as a whole.
The oldest picture in the packet was this one taken in September 1936.
It is looking north towards Bondgate with the Cleaver Hotel, selling Tower ales, on the left. There are three hairdressers in view occupying upstairs rooms, and on the left is "A Useful Shop to Know". On the right is Preslands, Pullars of Perth, the Milk Bar and then AH Masterman selling hats and caps. If any of today's pictures conjure up any memories or thoughts or you have any information about any of them, please email chris.lloyd@nne.co.uk
