FOR this week's archive, we've been rummaging around the Bishop Auckland picture packets in The Northern Echo's library.

SCHOOL CLOSURE: This Market Place picture was taken on June 9, 1964, on the day that it was announced that the Mount School was to close.
It was one of Bishop Auckland's few private schools, and started teaching in 1864.
The building on the right was a mid-18th Century house whereas the one on the left may have been purpose built as a school in 1873
TRUCKS GRAVEYARD: When the Barnard Castle to Bishop Auckland railway line, British Rail turned it into a cemetery for old wagons, shunting hundreds of them behind the houses on Watling Road and Clifford Avenue in Bishop Auckland, as they waited to be either dismantled or repaired at Shildon shops.
Residents in the houses were not happy.
This picture was taken in May 1964 when they were beginning a petition to get the trucks moved.
END OF THE LINE: Despite a valiant campaign, the Beeching Axe caused the closure of the Bishop Auckland to Crook railway line on March 6, 1965.
Here the last train, packed with "finalogists", leaves Crook.
"People all along the line drew back their curtains to see the last train and the tidy stations en route were left to slumber and die – a memory of the railway age," said the Echo.
STATION SPECULATION: When this picture was taken on May 27, 1964, there was speculation that part of Bishop Auckland station would be turned into a supermarket.
This is Station Approach, and the sign to the left of the runway is advertising a special excursion to Seaton Carew.
