PETER LANE is a Crookite in exile – his sister, Lorna, sends Memories out to him in Germany.
In response to Memories 292, he has dug out this splendid picture of beer being delivered to Rutherford’s pub in Church Street, Crook.
The pub was opposite St Catherine’s Church, and as the expansive etched window on the left suggests, it was also known as the Sun Inn. It is now the Viva Italian restaurant.
“The beer is being delivered in barrels on North Eastern Railway rullies, or carts), so the picture is almost certainly pre-1923,” says Peter. “But where would the beer have been brewed?”
