IN a corner of Memories’ notoriously untidy office, there is an old, battered suitcase. It contains a collection of photographs which were taken by The Northern Echo’s first chief photographer, Douglas Jefferson.
Over the years, we’ve shown you several of Jeff’s pictures, but as we rediscovered the suitcase this week during an impromptu spring clean, we thought we’d show you a few more.
He was born in Newcastle in 1892, served in the photography wing of the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War and then worked for the Echo for 39 years until he retired in 1958. He died at his home in Deneside Road, Darlington, in 1975, and left a suitcase of souvenirs.
Great photographer though he was, unfortunately he didn’t always scribble details on the back of his pictures, so if you have any information about any of them, please let us know.
