TOWN ADVERT: How Shildon presented itself to the rest of the world in 1964
HOT BARGAIN: A new estate of houses in Shildon could be fitted with the Berry Magicoal heater for just £25 19s 6d in January 1969 – saving you £4 10s 3d
NEWLY-BUILT: There are not many clues in the handwritten caption on the back of this photograph: "A street in Shildon, June 1959". Who can tell us where it is? What was the "street guide" that was available from the lamp-post on the left? What about the stylist lamp-posts themselves, which look like a question mark - does even one of them survive? And, of course, the three old cars on the right, which we've shown bigger below
What cars are these parked in Shildon in 1959?
COAL DROPS: This picture of the Stockton and Darlington Railway's famous coal drops was taken in 1925, when the drops were still operational – although it looks as if they needed a lot of support to hold them up
VERY IMPOSING: If ever a building were "imposing", it is this Primitive Methodist chapel which stood in Church Street. This picture was taken in July 1939
DOWN IN THE PARK: Hackworth Park, Shildon, in June 1961, with the rest house in the background
OLD HOUSES: The note scribbled on the back says “Auckland Terrace”, which is the B6286 that runs through Shildon to South Church. Nearly all the houses on the street are modern, so we guess this picture shows the original terrace near the Queens Head
STREET RAILWAY: Wesley Crescent still stands in Shildon, but no more does a railway line run down the street. Can anyone give us anymore details on the line?
