DURHAM Cathedral is commemorating the centenary of the First World War with a special concert, and it needs the help of Memories readers.
the concert starts on March 8, images of the war will be shown on a large screen in the nave. Memories is donating some of the pictures of local men – like blinded Private Allan Yates – which were printed in The Northern Echo during the war, and the cathedral is appealing to people to send in photographs of their family members.
The concert, by the highlyacclaimed Durham Cathedral Choir, will be a musical act of remembrance. It will consist of two famous requiems, one written by Johannes Brahms and the other by Herbert Howells, both of which are highly poignant and deal with untimely death and eternal hope.
Brahams’ Requiem was written in 1865 following the death of his mother, and Howells’ was written in the 1930s in memory of those who died during the First World War.
