ICICLES

When walking along the riverside, the icicles are wonderful to see.

There are so many of them, but such a variety.

There are gorgeous ones like chandeliers, each crystal sparkling bright.

From trees lying across the water, hang fringe like pelmets, an amazing sight.

Tops of branches bobbing up and down, their fingers dipping in the river.

But they soon begin to freeze and start to shake and shiver.

Their fingers start to swell up and look like big white balloons.

At night they shine and look like a gathering of full moons.

But best of all from the banks at a height

Hang huge sword like icicles gleaming bright.

They stand like an army all ready to fight.

So once again the river is the place to be.

It always offers such amazing variety.

Diana Davis, Witton-le-Wear

A STRANGE GAME

Icicles hanging like fragile glassware

’Pon gutters and windows here and there,

Birds so grateful for a crumb of bread

And seagulls screeching above our head.

The cricket field – a lovely sight

As if illuminated by fluorescent light.

Now who would play cricket ’pon a field of snow

But then I thought – Yes, I know,

Snowmen would come from miles around

To try their skills ’pon this ground.

But would they need white pads and shirts,

Maybe, to protect them from a ball that hurt.

So with carrot noses, scarves flying out

Great fun was had, there is no doubt.

As they raced up and down scoring runs galore

They brought laughter to town, and lots more

The ball being red was easy to see

Though at times it hid under the snow,

The winners cheered with very great glee

Spectators too, their faces aglow.

Snowmen playing cricket!

Never heard of before,

So next time there’s a freeze

We look forward to more.

IN THE GARDEN

I saw a ladybird today

in the garden…

A butterfly came to land beside me on the path….

It is lovely to go out into the garden

and stare…and…listen…and look.

A Jackdaw came past overhead as well.
