On the road: THE Leon benefits from being built on the same chassis as the VW Golf and Audi A3 and as such bears many of their characteristics, including above average handling and a ride that should suit most drivers. On occasions it can be deceptive, in a positive note, driving not unlike a saloon. The 1.4 TSI engine is quiet and refined and has enough power for every situation.

On the inside: Again, Volkswagen’s influence is apparent here. The whole cabin has an air of uncluttered simplicity. The materials used are of a decent quality and survived the three-child scuff test. The seats are comfortable without being overly cosseting and I found it straightforward enough to find my ideal seating position.

What do you get: NO matter which ST you go for, you will find levels of technology and equipment to justify your outlay. Over and above standard equipment, our SE model came with chrome roof rails, ambient lighting, front seatback storage, boot cargo net, leather handbrake, steering wheel and gear knob and chrome interior dashboard detail. There was also an additional heating and air conditioning outlet in the rear, front fog lights with cornering function and electric rear windows. We also got optional 17ins alloys, SEAT’s Technology Pack, Leather Pack, Family Pack – including door blinds and folding tables, Convenience Pack, including rain-sensing wipers and light sensor and Safety Pack among other items.

How practical is it: THE Leon ST scores highly in the practicality stakes with plenty of room for four adults or two adults and three children. There were no complaints about legroom and all in the rear had space to spare. The boot comes in at 587 litres with the seats up and 1,470 when the rear seats are folded. The boot floor height can also be adjusted to suit.

Running costs: SEAT claim you should be able to get a shade over 50mpg on the combined cycle. CO2 emissions are 122 g/km. Cheaper than a Golf estate, the ST also receives a 60,000 mile mechanical warranty, 12-year body warranty and two-year SEAT Service Mobility.

Verdict: A SMART and capable load lugger that undercuts rivals in price, but not necessarily in quality.
